Roxana Crisólogo Correa: “Daughter”

Translated by Clara Cruz, Ruth Hill, Encarnación Jiménez, Daisy King and Lucy Thompson. Read by Lucy Thompson (University of Leeds)

daughter

Daughter

you have decided to embark on a journey beyond reason

you have told me that between reason and your destination

lies something more than a seven hour journey

miles

without a shared language

no-one understands why I let you migrate

go to the other side

A well-behaved girl should first be sure of herself

before

she should know her history

define her boundaries

A Turkish flight attendant will tell you that the journey

is not really what it seems

she will tell you that it is more like a kind of homecoming

Just like birds

we know the right moment

we rise and we fall

ascend and descend

from the plane

with the dream that the world is ours

There will always be someone waiting for you behind the arrival gate

someone with flowers and balloons

reaching out a hand so you can make the leap of faith

to this side of the sand

and the haze

there will always be someone who promises to take you to this other side

of feelings

in a fleeting journey

Do not forget your mother’s advice

you who saw her run from one immigration control to another

We rise and we fall

we ascend and descend from the plane

with the dream that the world is ours.

Hija

Hija
