Amparo Arróspide: “It wasn’t a pointless question”

Translated by Leah West and Kathryn Douglas (University of Leeds). Read and edited by Robin Ouzman Hislop

and must the magical world die with you?

Antonio Machado. “Galleries LXXVIII”

It wasn’t a pointless question

sitting beneath the tea tree

nor a finale nor an addiction to life

in Kali grams

you didn’t lose

the compass,  the path, the paintbrush

did you find them?

[through the corner of a mirror

the shadow of the past looms

or a silver platter in the drizzle]

one step in front of another

the penultimate moves

through a canvas of leaves, Kali-

graphy of tea, asking questions

without an answer to tell yourself  what will  distance be

now that we are never alone what will distance be.
