Elena Torres: “Abacus”

Elena Torres
Abacus by Elena Torres

Translated by Cameron Tallant

If the evenings are guests

that guard details

in a calendar of doubts.

If in a kingdom of mirrors

the sight cuts distance

with the glass of anguish.

If beauty does not create

a shape of six sides

on which to overlay authenticity.

Then we need

the abacus of compliments

to count the hours.

A manual of gratitude

to survive the fear.

Abacus (ábaco) in Spanish

Si las tardes son huéspedes

que custodian detalles

en un calendario de dudas.

Si en un reino de espejos

la mirada corta distancias

con el cristal de los quebrantos.

Si lo bello no crea

una figura de seis vértices

donde superponer lo auténtico.

Entonces hace falta

el ábaco de los requiebros

para contar las horas.

Un manual de gratitud

para sobrevivir al miedo.
